Job Description

Nationally-ranked in game design, Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio is seeking a faculty member to take its game engineering technology program — and its students — to the next level. The Engineering Department is accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Digital Simulation & Gaming.

The duties of the position include:

  1. Instructing undergraduate courses in the Digital Simulation & Gaming Engineering Technology program. Courses taught may include:
    • Introductory through advanced programming
    • Mathematics and programming of 3D graphics
    • Game engine use and design
    • Artificial intelligence
  2. Engaging with students in and out of the classroom in co-curricular activities. Opportunities include:
    • Representing SSU at industry conferences (ECGC, GDEX, GDC)
    • Coaching e-sports teams
    • Advising and mentoring students applying for jobs/internships
    • Mentoring student (gaming) clubs
    • Teaching workshops and summer camps to area residents
  3. Engaging in professional development and scholarly activities such as:
    • Taking courses and attending workshops
    • Undertaking inter-disciplinary research and projects with fellow SSU faculty (especially gaming arts)
    • Refining curriculum to match changing industry needs

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for rank of Senior Instructor (non-tenure track)

  1. Bachelors of Science, with 5 years of professional experience, or

  2. Masters of Science degree at the time of hire in the area of computer science, computer engineering or engineering technology, or a closely related discipline.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track)

  1. Doctorate in Science at the time of hire in the area of computer science, computer engineering, engineering technology or closely related teaching specialization from an regionally accredited institution, or

  2. A Master of Science or closely related teaching specialization from a regionally accredited institution and three (3) years of full-time teaching experience at regionally accredited institution or five (5) years of professional experience in the area of specialization may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Ph.D. at the time of hire in the area of computer science, computer engineering or engineering technology, or a closely related discipline

  2. Three (3) years of full-time teaching experience at a regionally accredited institution or five (5) years of professional experience in the area of specialization.
  3. Demonstrated proficiency in at least half of the following topics: Operating system design and implementation, software engineering, implementation of network-based software, compiler design, data structures, algorithms, two and three dimensional graphics programming.
  4. Demonstrated proficiency in at least half of the following programming languages: C, C++, Assembly, Python, Javascript, Java, C#, Lua
  5. Demonstrated successful teaching experience.
  6. Demonstrable experience working with software development in a commercial organization.
  7. Demonstrable experience using Game/simulation engines (Havok, Unreal, Ogre, SciLab, MatLab, Unity, Lumberyard, GameMaker).
