Job Description Summary

JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Director of Career Services is responsible for the administration, coordination, scheduling, and support of career development services for Shawnee State students and graduates.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

FUNCTIONS

  1. Assures the availability, quality, and effectiveness of services provided for students and alumni through all stages of their career pathway.
  2. Engages University stakeholders in career and major exploration, job/internship/graduate school searches, mentorships, and skills development (e.g. resume writing, interview skills)
  3. Tracks and reports on job placement of graduates.
  4. Manages the budget and resources of the career center to ensure that the office operates within budget and in accordance with University mission, policy and procedures.
  5. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assures availability, quality, and effectiveness of services provided for students and alumni through all stages of their career pathway.
    • Develops a plan aligned with the University’s mission and strategic plan for Career Center operations; accountable for achieving the results defined in the plan.
    • Organizes an effective Career Center for students and alumni.
    • Provides career development services for new student orientation, Week of Welcome, student employees, Showcase Days, University Ambassadors, RA training, etc.
    • Conducts formal and informal evaluations to measure the quality of services provided by the office. Prepare annual report of Career Development office.

  2. Engages University stakeholders in career and major exploration, job/internship/graduate school searches, mentorships, and skills development (e.g. resume writing, interview skills).
    • Develop and implement outreach strategies, including fostering and maintaining relationships with employers, recruiters, alumni and community partners.
    • Establish and maintain a system to provide small group and one-on-one career counseling. (i.e., major exploration, career development processes, job readiness skills).
    • Collaborate with the faculty and the Coordinator of Alumni Career Services & Workforce Development to implement and support student internships. Recommend changes as needed for the student internship resource manual.
    • Provides students and alumni with opportunities to improve career-building skills (e.g. writing resumes, interview skills, job searching skills for internships or workforce).
    • Collaborates with various academic departments to host workshops and seminars specific to students of varying career interests.
    • Designs and presents workshops, job fairs, and graduate fairs for students and alumni seeking assistance in the job search process. Maintains a system of notification of job opportunities to students and alumni.
    • Provides information and promotional materials about academic programs and their career connections for current students. Information and materials are provided through social media and Career Services webpages.
    • Organizes and leads Career Services Advisory Committee composed of key local business, University, and community members.
    • Liaises with college and program advisory boards.
  3. Tracks and reports on job placement of graduates.
    • Conducts job, graduate & professional school placement survey of recent graduates.
    • Maintain a database that tracks use of career services, job placement, internships, mentorships, and acceptance into graduate & professional school.
  4. Manages the budget and resources of the career center to ensure that the office operates within budget and in accordance with University mission, policy and procedures.
    • Supervises, evaluates, and provides training for staff and student employees.
    • Develops and manages the operating budget for the office.
    • Ensure all Career Services events are scheduled on the University calendar and follow University policies and procedures.
  5. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Provost.
Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE)

  1. Master’s degree, preferably in career counseling, student affairs, or a related field.

  2. 4-5 years’ professional experience in development and implementation of student experiential programs, including career development and internship preparation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

MINIMUM JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  1. Professional experience in development and implementation of student experiential programs, in including career development and internship preparation.

  2. Demonstrated competencies in budgets and management of data

  3. Excellent organization, oral and written communication, and collaboration skills.

  4. Understanding of the college environment, student populations, and campus culture.

  5. Commitment to working with a diverse community

  6. Ability to work effectively under pressure, solve problems, and adjust quickly to changing requirements.

  7. Enthusiasm for innovation and ability to manage change.

  8. Knowledge of current trends and developments in Career Services.

  9. Experience hiring, training, supervising, managing, and leading a team of professional/paraprofessionals.

Preferred Qualifications Summary

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Certification in career assessment.

  2. Membership in/familiarity with National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

  3. Post-secondary teaching experience.

Working Conditions Summary

Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive dust, noise, heat and the like
